We've suddenly realized a great wood surrounds us which we do not remember walking into but which now seems impossible to navigate out of. This place is the Unknown, the fearful uncertainty of adulthood. And in our ear chirps a voice that tries to guide us, but which may not know what's best for us. Which we may resent a little, out of envy. We are trying and failing at life and love and haven't yet figured where we fit into the bigger picture.Īt our side is a constant reminder of how we used to view the world, a reminder of what we've lost. We are the cynical young adults, who are at a place where we've traded in our youthful optimism for pessimistic worrying.
We like to hear this tale because it's the tale we each imagine for ourselves. It tells us the tale we want to hear, about a person with problems they can't seem to overcome.īut through perseverance and with the help of others along the way they manage to stumble through all the muck to a happy ending. Over the Garden Wall itself has endeared itself so firmly with its fans because it resonates with that yearning for childhood innocence. A large reason for enjoying a tale such as Over the Garden Wall is escaping from reality into another world, where at the end of the half hour everything turns out okay. In the real world things don't always go right, the good guys don't always win and sometimes bad things happen to good people. In the last episode of the show, it is apparent that The Unknown is a purgatory-like afterlife, and that the brothers’ journey to find their “home” has actually been them searching for a way back the land of the living.I think the tale is the loveliest lie of all, not in that it didn't happen for those characters involved in its telling, but that the nature of the animated narrative itself is to bring you happiness through telling a story with a happy ending, a lie if you will.
The Unknown is separated into different regions, much like how the Commedia’s realms have different areas, with various trials to be overcome in each section. Later in the show, we come to find out the place where Wirt and Greg have ended up is referred to as “The Unknown”. The brothers are pursued by a monstrous dog when they first arrive, akin to how Dante is accosted by the three beasts in Limbo shortly after appearing there. This is very similar to the first canto of Inferno, in which Dante is also lost in “a dark wood”.
In the opening scene of the show, Wirt and Greg are lost in a forest with no recollection of how they came to be there.

Over the Garden Wall alludes to Dante’s Commedia through its settings, the characters, and the aspects that the two versions of the afterlife share, all of which implies that the series is based loosely on Dante’s travels in his Commedia. The show resembles Dante’s own trip to the afterlife in many ways.
Unaware of their true plight, Wirt and Greg navigate their way through unfamiliar territory in search of a way home, and meet other unusual characters along the way. The show focuses on two brothers, Wirt and Greg. Over the Garden Wall is a children’s cartoon series with a rather dark subject: a visit to the afterlife.
